Bravo Packing, Inc. Another Recall? FDA issued a notice on March 3, 2021; the recall was expanded on March 16, 2021.

Bravo Packing, Inc. is once again in the crosshairs of pet owners — and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the government body charged with assuring the safety of pet food.

In early March 2021, the firm recalled all packets of their frozen raw pet food, Performance Dog, due to the possibility of contamination with salmonella or listeria germs. Additionally, the business recalls a product called Simply Ground Beef, which is intended for animal consumption.

On March 16, the recall was significantly expanded to cover ALL Bravo Packing, Inc. pet food and bones in all container sizes and dates.

The original recall was prompted by positive salmonella and listeria tests conducted by the FDA on product samples. According to the FDA, the extension was announced due to "possible cross-contamination."

Fortunately, no infections have been documented in dogs or humans thus far. If you have any of the aforementioned goods, stop feeding them and discard them. After handling the product or cleaning up possibly contaminated items and surfaces, thoroughly wash your hands.

Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments of Salmonella Infection in Dogs

Salmonella bacteria are the cause of salmonella infection. Vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms, but they can progress to more severe illnesses. The germs are present in raw or undercooked meat, contaminated pet food, saliva and feces of another affected animal. Salmonellosis is a disease that affects dogs that is caused by germs that are shared across animals such as people, other pets, and reptiles.

Salmonella Infection Symptoms in Dogs

Salmonellosis is a bacterial infection that produces severe diarrhea. Certain dogs may exhibit no symptoms while having a salmonella infection. Others will exhibit symptoms 72 hours after infection. Acute diarrhea to vomiting and vomiting are all possible symptoms. It is critical to get treatment for these symptoms immediately, since they might progress to more dangerous illnesses such as gastroenteritis or sepsis. Salmonella can be asymptomatic or cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the severity of the infection.

Salmonella Infections in Dogs: What Causes Them

Salmonella germs are present in raw or undercooked meat and eggs, as well as contaminated pet food and wet food. For longer periods of time, infected dogs shed the germs in their feces and saliva. Due to their weakened immune systems, puppies and old dogs are more susceptible to salmonellosis. Antibiotic-treated dogs, particularly those taking them to prevent an imbalance in their intestinal flora, may produce an imbalance of beneficial bacteria in the stomach. Never allow your dog to come into touch with an infected animal's excrement or saliva.

How Salmonella is Diagnosed

Salmonellosis is diagnosed by bacterial culture from feces or by recurrent positive cultures in the absence of symptoms. Only a single isolation from feces, blood, or any tissue samples, in conjunction with the presence of clinical symptoms, can be used to make the diagnosis. Repeated sampling is necessary to minimize the possibility of obtaining a false negative result. Serology has the potential to be an effective method for identifying possible Salmonella carriers who should be followed up with recurrent fecal collection. Serologic assays are available to detect particular antibodies in blood or milk and are becoming more often utilized as a diagnostic tool. Clinical syndromes are often distinctive but must be distinguished from other similar disorders found in each species.

Treatment for salmonella in dogs

Salmonella infection is usually minor in dogs, with the only symptom being acute diarrhea. In these circumstances, dogs' immune systems will fight it off, however they may require a constant supply of fresh, clean water to rehydrate after losing fluids due to diarrhea or vomiting. In more critical situations, your veterinarian may admit your dog to the hospital and administer intravenous fluids. If your dog develops a blood infection or sepsis, he or she may require a plasma or blood transfusion. Additionally, veterinarians may administer steroids to help avoid shock in extreme instances. Occasionally, a veterinarian will suggest withholding food for 48 hours and separating a dog from other pets to prevent the virus from spreading. Adult dogs recover normally from the majority of salmonella infections.

There are many ways to care for your dog if he or she has salmonella. You can give them a bland diet consisting of rice, boiled chicken and white toast. If they have diarrhea you should try feeding him or her Pedialyte instead of water because it will help with the dehydration and keep his or her electrolytes in balance.
